East Berlin.
1980, the wall was in construction and Jarvis and Laila Müller couldn't be more in favor of separating east and west Germany. They weren't victims of "Brain Drain" and authoritarian governing style was their favorite. So what else could they do except to bring in a bouncing baby boy. What better name than that of the famous theologist Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
1985, the wall promises to be finished in the next three years, both sides are looking forward to separating authoritative from capitalist. Jarvis works for the GDR and Laila raises Dietrich.
1989, the wall is completed, Laila gets pregnant but miscarries. Laila falls into a depression and urges Jarvis to flee with her to West Berlin. Much to the dismay of Laila, Jarvis refuses. Spiraling deeper into insanity, Laila decides to cross the iron curtain with Dietrich. Mid-way Laila is shot and Dietrich is forced to find shelter with his grandparents.
1990, the fall of the Berlin Wall, Jarvis is jailed for his time with the GDR.
1992, Dietrich's grandfather dies.
Los Angeles
1994, Dietrich's grandmother takes ill and sends Dietrich off to Los Angeles to live with his Aunt Carla and her lover Susan. Here Dietrich attends high-school and adapts to the language well. Picks up punk rock and politics.
1998, Gerhard Schröder becomes Chancellor of Germany. Dietrich graduates from high-school with honors and decides to take a few years off before college. Dietrich's grandmother dies. Monica Lewinsky scandal, Clinton on the brink of impeachment.
2002, Jarvis is released from jail and Dietrich pauses his plans to move back to Berlin for a few months. In Berlin, Dietrich buys a camera and starts recording anything he can. For a few months, it satisfies his craving to be creative but when his visa expires, Dietrich is forced to move back to the U.S. Euros replace Marks in Germany.
2005, Dietrich graduates from film school and meets Sophie Blau, a german student studying literature. They fall in love and get married 6 months later. Dietrich applies for dual-citizenship and moves back to Berlin. Angela Merkel elected as the chancellor of Germany, the first female chancellor in its history.
2007, Sophie and Dietrich divorce because of marital problems and Dietrich lands a job as the camera man on the KTLA morning show. Dietrich is introduced to contemporary electronica and punk.
2009, Barack Obama is elected the president of the United States, the first African American president to serve. Dietrich is alone. Dietrich hates his job. Dietrich hates Germany. Dietrich hates America. Dietrich wishes that everyone wasn't a total fucking idiot.
2011, Dietrich and Sebastiana Castilgione marry. Dietrich is the process of making a movie.
